Ev sahibi Güney Afrika’ya nam-ı diğer ‘Bafana Bafana’lar özlem duydukları Dünya Kupası’na ev sahipliği yapıyorlar. Afrika’da heyecan ve umut bir arada yaşanıyor. Güney Afrika’ya yıllarca FIFA tarafından resmi turnuvalara katılma yasağı getirilmişti.  1961 ila 1992 yılları arasında cezalı olan ev sahibi ülke hiçbir turnuvaya katılamamıştı.  Bu cezanın sebebi ise ırkçılıktı.  CAF (Afrika Futbol Konfederasyon)’ın ilk kurulduğu yıl olan 1956 yılında Güney Afrikalı temsilci Afrika Kupasına katılacak takımların ya sırf siyahî oyuncularla ya da sırf beyaz oyuncularla katılması gerektiğini söyledi bundan sonra gelişen olaylar sebebiyleGüney Afrika önce CAF’tan ihraç edildi sonra FIFA üyeliği askıya alındı. 1976 yılında ise ırkçı rejimin yönetime gelmesiyle ülke FIFA’dan resmen ihraç edildi. 1992 yılında rejim değişimiyle tekrar FIFA üyeliğini geri kazanan ‘Bafana Bafana’lar uzun süredir dünya sahnesinde bekleneni veremiyordu.

Kadrosunda yıldız sayısı fazla olmayan Güney Afrika’nın en büyük 3 kozu tabii ki McCarthy, Pienaar ve kaptan Mokoena. Sistemi ve oyunu okuyuşu ile ön plana çıkan Brezilyalı teknik adamın en büyük özelliği ise Güney Afrika’ya gelene kadar 9 kez Milli Takım çalıştırmasıdır. 2007-2008 yılında da Güney Afrika’nın başında olan Parreira Afrika Kupası’nda başarısız olmuştu. Ama bu sefer dünya vitrinine çıkacak olan Parreira belki de büyük takımlar için sürprizler hazırlıyor olabilir. Bundan önce 2 kere bu kupaya katılan Güney Afrika 2sinde de gruptan çıkma başarısı gösteremezken sadece 1 galibiyet alabildiler. Tarihlerindeki tek büyük başarıları ise 1996 yılında aldıkları ‘Africa Cup of Nations’ yani Afrika Kupasıdır.
